1 AIP-6 Water Services CEOS Water Portal integrating with GEO DAB
Satoko Horiyama Miura Yoshiyuki Kudo JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) This presentation is about CEOS Water Portal integrating with GEO Data Access Broker, or GEO DAB, a project supported by JAXA. CEOS Water Portal has been developed within a project in CEOS, Committee on Earth Observation Satellites, and is a distributed system component of DIAS, Data Integration and Analysis System.

The global water cycle (US Global Change Research Program, 2003) Model output data Satellite data In-situ data In recent years, we are seeing more extreme events happen all over the world, leading to serious natural disasters and economic losses. To mitigate those impacts, understanding water cycle is essential and scientists are addressing the hard task. They need various data for their research, including in-situ data, satellite data, and model output data. Integrating the different types of data enriches the analysis to eventually produce valuable information for people including decision makers. source: UCAR

CEOS Water Portal aims to provide one-stop-service for a variety of hydrological and water relevant data, in order to support data integration and analysis by users. Through a single user interface, users can easily discover and access the data that they need. The portal stores and manages data centers’ catalogs in its own database, and each server at distributed data centers and the portal are connected by OPeNDAP or OGC web services, for data access. The portal also has a feature that enables users to register use cases. Users register the results of their research achieved by using data via the portal ,as a use case, which then becomes available for other users to discover and view. Non-scientist users like decision makers and officials such as river administrators can find the researches and may contact the scientist for further information, or possibly about solving a specific problem they are facing. This helps generate a feedback loop centered on the water portal and it encourages communication within and across communities and industrial domains. Use cases (Research summary)

4 Use case of the portal’s data
Drought Index mapping in Philippines Model analysis for river basins by integrating : GPCC datasets CEOP Model output datasets CMIP3 climate model output datasets AWCI in-situ datasets The model results help observe agricultural and economic losses Let’s look briefly at an actual use case. A scientist, in order to conduct model analysis to generate drought index map in Philippines, makes searches and obtains the hydrological data through the portal. After registered as a use case, the research summary becomes available on the portal.

And at this time, the GEO Data Access Broker, or DAB, has just become accessible from the water portal. GEO Portal is the primary gateway to GEOSS resources and connected with DAB for the search. It is very important that CEOS Water Portal offers as many and wide spectrum of datasets as possible to satisfy users’ needs. There are more water related dataset catalogs available from DAB through the initiative of AIP-6 Water Services, and DAB exposes open catalog services including OpenSearch and CSW for third party clients to access. CEOS Water Portal is now enabled to access DAB via OpenSearch interface, using particular search parameters to narrow the search results down to relevant ones. 7 Demo First, let’s go to GEO portal and makes a search with some keywords (ceos water portal) (“click”). (89件ヒットで最終ページにあり) And you notice CEOS Water Portal appears in the results. Then, let’s enter keywords for datasets (“Rainfall Turakina ”) (“click”). Now you have the results and “this” is the in-situ rainfall dataset of New Zealand. (“click”) You can find links for information to get to the actual data. Now let’s go to CEOS Water Portal, specify a variable, “precipitation” (“click” Precipitation) You get the results and what you have down here is search results from DAB. (hover through each service names) In this case, you notice results associated with country names, New Zealand ,Italy, and Canada, which are national federation effort of water data services achieved by the AIP-6 Water Services. I click “New Zealand Monitoring Network” and the same dataset you just saw at the GEO portal search can be found. The water portal allows you to see quick look image before download.

8 Conclusion CEOS Water Portal successfully integrated GEO DAB
Use OpenSearch interface Retrieve water datasets with proper search parameters and keywords Much more opportunity for users to discover datasets As just demonstrated, the same dataset in relation to water variables are mutually discoverable from both portals, by integrating GEO DAB. Whereas GEO portal is a cross-domain, neutral client looking at the entire GEOSS resources, GEOS Water Portal is a domain specific, community portal focusing on water related variables. Nevertheless, by making use of proper search parameters , the portal successfully integrated DAB, giving its users much more opportunity to discover and access the data they are after.
