Hay there is or there are
Hay is an irregular form of the verb haber and may be considered idiomatic.

When hay is followed by a singular subject, it means there is.
Hay una cama en mi dormitorio. There is a bed in my bedroom/dorm room. Hay un escritorio en mi dormitorio. There is a desk in my bedroom/dorm room.

When hay is used in a question it means is/are there.
¿Hay lámparas en tu dormitorio? Are there lamps in your bedroom/dorm room? ¿Hay un escritorio en tu dormitorio? Include pictures – p 100 Is there a desk in your bedroom/dorm room?

When hay is followed by a plural subject, it means there are.
Hay dos baños en mi casa. There are two bathrooms in my house. ¿Hay dos baños en tu casa? Are there two bathrooms in your house? Remember, when hay is used in a question it means is there or are there.

¿Qué hay en tu mochila? What is there in your backpack?
¿Hay una calculadora? Is there a calculator? ¿Hay libros? Are there books? Pictures – p 66 ¿Hay un horario de clases? Is there a class schedule?

Hay indicates the existence of people and things.

No hay indicates that something or someone is not there.
¿No hay estudiantes en la biblioteca? Are there no students in the library? No hay un diccionario en la biblioteca. Picture – p 71 – Can you delete the students from the picture? There is no dictionary in the library.
