1 Inductive Reasoning Teacher Note: A sorting activity that can be used with any text. Prior to the activity, the teacher cuts out various words from the text and puts them into envelopes. I usually have students work in groups of four.

2 Inductive Reasoning Working in groups…
Categorize (sort) the words from you envelope into categories. You may use your phones to look up the meaning of unknown words. You decide what the categories will be. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to divide them up, as long as you can explain how you categorized them. Write your categories on your table to share.

3 Inductive Reasoning Gallery Walk
Walk around to the other tables to see how your classmates categorized the words that you were given. Write down any feedback and/or questions that you might have for the group. Be nice and constructive.

4 Extend Your Thinking What type of mood (feeling) do the words in the envelope create? Were there more nouns, verbs, adjectives or adverbs? Try to match adjectives with nouns and adverbs with verbs to create phrases that seem to fit together. Calculate the average number of syllables for the words you were given.

5 Making Predictions Based on the words that you were given, write a paragraph predicting what you think the text will be about and why you think that. OR Write the beginning of a short story or write a poem using some of the words that you were given.
