1 Photosynthesis StudyJams: Photosynthesis

2

3 What is the difference between….
Think prefixes and root words! What is the difference between…. Autotroph Heterotroph “auto”- self “troph”- feeder “hetero”- other “troph”- feeder Organisms that can make their own food. Producers (plants) Organisms that cannot make their own food. Consumers (animals)

4 Unlock the Essential Questions
How do living things get energy from the sun? Directly or indirectly from the energy of sunlight that is captured during photosynthesis.

5 Draw a chart in your notebooks showing how the Sun’s energy can get to a lion.
grass

6 “photo”- light (Greek) “synthesis”- put together; combine
Can you break down this word into a prefix and root to figure out the meaning? “photo”- light (Greek) “synthesis”- put together; combine

7 Unlock the Essential Questions
What happens during photosynthesis? Plants absorb energy from the sun and use it to convert CO2 and H2O into glucose and O2. BrainPOP: Photosynthesis

8 What Happens During Photosynthesis?
Stage 1: Capturing the Sun’s Energy Stage 2: Using Energy to Make Food Chlorophyll (a green substance found in the chloroplasts) captures light energy from the sun. Carbon dioxide, water and the captured light energy make glucose (sugar). Oxygen gas is also released as waste.

9 Photosynthesis Chemical Equation
The process of photosynthesis is a CHEMICAL REACTION! light energy + 6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O6 + 6O2 __________ + ___________ + _________ ___________ + ___________ carbon dioxide sunlight glucose oxygen water How many total atoms do the reactants have? 36 How many total atoms do the products have? 36

10 Law of Conservation of Energy and Law of Conservation of Mass
Total amount of matter and energy before a chemical reaction EQUALS the total amount of matter and energy after the chemical reaction.

11 Study Jams: Photosynthesis

12 Not all sunlight is absorbed by the plant’s leaves. Some gets reflected.

13 Remember the Electromagnetic Spectrum?
The wavelengths that are visible to the human eye.

14 Reflection, Refraction and Absorption

15 Exit Slip What are the reactants of photosynthesis?
What are the products of photosynthesis? What is the waste product produced by photosynthesis? In which cell organelle does photosynthesis take place? Does the Law of Conservation of Mass apply to the chemical process of photosynthesis? Explain!
