1 Chapter 8 Photosynthesis

2 Chapter 8 Section 1 : Energy and Life
Organisms that obtain food from other organisms that they eat Organisms that make their own food Heterotrophs Autotrophs

3 Energy Energy is the ability to do work
Ultimately the energy that living things needs comes from the SUN Energy comes in many different forms: Light Heat Electricity Chemical

4 Chemical Energy and ATP
ATP = Adenosine Triphosphate What does an ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, molecule consist of? Adenine, ribose, and three phosphate groups What do the lines between these parts of the molecule represent? Chemical bonds What would be the result if the third phosphate group were removed? The molecule would then be ADP, or adenosine diphosphate, and energy would be released by breaking the bond between the second and third phosphate. What is the difference between ATP and ADP? ATP has three phosphate groups, while ADP has two phosphate groups. Phosphate groups Adenine P P P ribose P

5 ATP and Glucose The Energy Molecules
Most cells can carry only a small amount of ATP (just like you only want to carry a few coins) It can’t carry large amounts of energy for a long time Cells can regenerate ATP from ADP by using the energy in glucose A single molecule of glucose stores more than 90 times the amount of energy a single ATP molecule can (just like dollar bills have a larger value than coins) ATP Glucose

6 Chapter 8 Section 2 Photosynthesis: An Overview
6 CO2 + 6 H2O ⇨ C6H12O6 + 6 O2 The chlorophyll inside chloroplasts captures the energy in sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water molecules into glucose and oxygen molecules

7 Look at p.207 figure 8-5 How does the color spectrum at the bottom relate to the graph itself? It shows the wavelengths that each color on the spectrum has In what regions of the spectrum does chlorophyll b absorb light best? Blue and red In what region of the spectrum does chlorophyll a and b absorb the least light? green In what regions of the spectrum does chlorophyll a absorb light best? Red and violet

8 The Reactions of Photosynthesis
Chapter 8 Section 3 The Reactions of Photosynthesis

9 Structures inside a Chloroplast
Granum

10 Reactions inside the chloroplast
Occurs in the thylakoids Use water and the energy from light to produce ATP (energy storage), NADPH (energy carrier), and oxygen Occurs in the stroma Use the energy stored in ATP and NADPH (from the light-dependent reactions) to build glucose Light-dependent reactions Calvin Cycle: Light- independent reactions

11 Homework: P.203 #1, 2, 3, 4, 5 P.207 # 2, 3, 4 P.214 #1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Don’t forget to have your Chapter 8 Flashcards ready to turn in tomorrow. Tomorrow is your Chapter 8 Vocabulary Quiz
