Georgia Signers Button Gwinnett- Strongly supported independence from Great Britain, heavily involved in GA politics before the War. Died in a duel with William McIntosh later after the war.

Lyman Hall One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence
Became Governor of GA in 1783 Very instrumental in the founding of the University of Georgia.

George Walton Signed the Declaration of Independence
One of the most successful lawyers in the country Served as Governor of Georgia in 1789 and a US Senator

Loyalists Loyalists- people living in the colonies that were loyal to Britain and did not want the colonies to break away from Britain. Many Georgians were loyalists because they prospered under royal leadership (think royal governors) Loyalists were also called Tories Many Georgians wanted British protection from the American Indians

Patriots Patriots- people living in the colonies that wanted to break away from Britain. Patriots were outnumbered in the GA colony by Loyalists. Many Patriots joined the Liberty Boys and met (in secret) at Tondee’s Tavern in Savannah. As the war progressed, Georgia (Savannah) came under British control. However, the frontier of Georgia remained under Patriot control throughout the war.

Battle of Kettle Creek Patriots won
Took place Feb 14th, 1779 in the back country of Georgia. Patriots were led by Elijah Clarke and Thomas Dooly Patriots won Significant- Patriots got much need supplies and a moral boost Heroes- Elijah Clarke- led the Patriots to victory, Austin Dabney- slave who fought with the Patriots, saved Clarke’s life by taking a bullet for him. Awarded land and his freedom for his bravery

Siege of Savannah October 1779
Joint force of French and Patriot soldiers tried to retake the city from the British They were easily defeated by the British. Significant- British held Savannah until the end of the war. Heroes- Count Casmir Pulaski- a Polish nobleman who was killed leading a charge against the British.
