1 Phonics Meeting

2 What is Phonics Screening?
The Phonics Screening Check is a short and simple assessment of phonic decoding. It consists of a list of 40 words, half real words and half non-words (alien words), which Year 1 children read to a teacher. If a child in Year 1 fails the assessment they will then be able to retake it in Year 2. This is undertaken in all state schools in Year 1 and for children in year 2 who need to retake.

3 When is Phonics Screening?
The Phonics Screening will take place the week commencing Monday 11th June. Each child will be taken one at a time throughout the week. Results of the Phonics Screening will be given out with their report.

4 What happens on the day? Each child is taken out one at a time by their class teacher. No fuss- we call it a ‘quiz’. The children do not think of it as a test or assessment.
