2 DO NOW: Take out your packet Solve using mental math (No calculators, pencils, talking or air writing) find more than one way to solve. 3. You will have 2 minutes to get this done 13 x 6

3 Area of Parallelograms
I will be able to find the area of parallelograms by composing it into rectangles So that I can apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems. I will show I know if when I can complete at least 6 real world or mathematical problems with my partners with at least 80% accuracy G.A.1

4 Language Objective By the end of lesson, students will be able to use the language domains of reading and writing to communicate the academic math language of parallelograms. They will verbally communicate and find the area of parallelograms by making (composing) it into rectangles. They will show their understanding by completing at least 6 problems with their partners with at least 80% accuracy. Academic Math Language Vocabulary: parallelogram, compose, triangle, rectangle, quadrilateral, trapezoid, decompose, polygon

10 Mini-Lesson Take a parallelogram and cut it out. Since we know the area of a rectangle is length x width (or base x height), we can change the parallelogram into a rectangle by cutting a right triangle of one side of the parallelogram and gluing it to the other side.

11 Before cutting the triangle off, We are going to draw a dotted line, that is perpendicular to the base, to show the triangle you will cut. Fold your paper along this line. Using a ruler, measure in inches, the base and the height. The area of the original parallelogram is the same because both shapes have the same amount of space inside. The area of a parallelogram would be the same formula as the area of a rectangle.

12 Classwork Work with your partners to solve pages 2-4
You will have about 20 minutes before we check in.

13 How do you feel? topic.
