1 Volcanoes

2 Volcano An opening in the Earth's crust through which molten rock, gases and ashes erupt Landform that develops around this opening

3 Magma Formation Molten rock that is formed in the Earth
Conditions at both divergent and subduction boundaries are ideal for magma formation Most volcanoes are found along mid ocean ridges, where plates are moving apart & subduction boundaries, where plates are being forced under other plates

4

5 Magma and Erupted Materials…
Types of Magma  Basaltic magma (Kilauea), Andesitic magma (Mount St. Helen), and Rhyolitic magma (Yellowstone caldera)

6 Lava Magma that reaches the Earth;s surface is called LAVA.

7 Lava Types…. Pahoehoe  basaltic lava at high temperatures flowing quickly out of vents; lava with smooth ropelike surfaces AA  cooler basaltic lava that moves more slowly, cools quickly with rough jagged surfaces.

8 Underwater lava flowa…..

9 Ash and Fragment Material
Ash  fragments that are less than 2 millimeters in diameter Lapilli  fragments that are between 2 to 64 millimeters Block or Bomb  fragments that are larger than 64 millimeters

10 Volcanic Landforms Shield Landforms Cinder Cones Composite volcanoes
Caldera
