Pendulums
2
Pendulum Phet Investigation
3
A SIMPLE PENDULUM A string with a mass at the end which is free to swing
4
LENGTH OF THE PENDULUM Distance from the point of suspension to the mass It is denoted by L
5
Equilibrium OF THE PENDULUM
“B” is the equilibrium position A and C are the extreme points
6
OSCILLATION – movement back and forth
The motion of the mass from its extreme position A to C and back to A
7
Period of a Pendulum Period (T)– amount of time to complete one oscillation Length of string (L) Acceleration due to gravity (g) =9.8 m/s2 𝑇=2π 𝐿 𝑔
8
What about Mass?? The period of a pendulum DOES NOT depend on the mass that is swinging!
9
Resonance When a force is applied to an oscillating object at time intervals equal to the period Increases amplitude Examples: pumping on a swing, jumping rhythmically on a trampoline, rocking your car back and forth to free it from a snow bank
