1 The Message in a Bottle story

2 Ocean Currents of the world
So where was the buoy dropped?

3 Southern hemisphere circulation Northern hemisphere circulation
Tracking the buoy in the Atlantic Southern hemisphere circulation Northern hemisphere circulation Fortaleza Equator

4 Message in a Bottle Log Book
These positions were taken by the satellite tracker which was contained within the capsule. A signal was sent every two days. The signal reached our website from where we could up load it onto our map. We did not expect the capsule to travel so fast, or to reach land so quickly. Because of this the battery in the tracker had a lifespan of 18 months! So we will be launching the capsule again in November 2010 when we travel back across the ocean from Canada to Britain.

6 How do ocean currents affect climate?
Six cities are marked on the map in green? What do you notice about how the cities are paired? Use the worksheet for each city to draw a graph showing: - temperature throughout the year. - rainfall throughout the year CARTWRIGHT CARDIFF MIAMI RABAT What are the similarities and differences? What effect do ocean currents have on each city? RIO DE JANEIRO WALVISBAY

7 Exploring the climate….. THE COLD NORTH
Name……………………. CARTWRIGHT, Canada and CARDIFF, England have very different climates because of the ocean currents? Which one is colder and which one is drier? 1. Plot the temperatures for each city as a bar graph. 2. Plot a line graph for the rainfall. What do you notice are the differences between the two cities? Rainfall mm Temp ˚C 240 40 200 36 180 32 160 28 140 24 120 20 100 16 80 12 60 8 40 4 20 JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC

8 Exploring the climate……. THE SOUTHERN TROPICS
Name……………………. One city has seasonal flooding and a very humid summer, whilst the other has cool winters and is near a desert. Which currents cause which climate?

9 Exploring the climate…… THE NORTHERN TROPICS
Name……………………. One city suffers from hurricanes, whilst the other has remarkable cold winters. Which one is which? Plot the temperatures for each city as a bar graph. 2. Plot a line graph for the rainfall. What do you notice are the differences between the two cities? Rainfall mm Temp ˚C 240 40 200 36 180 32 160 28 140 24 120 20 100 16 80 12 60 8 40 4 20 JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC
