2 ANECDOTES -- An anecdote is a short narrative inserted into an essay that develops an idea or argument. This sounds like. . . EXAMPLES -- provide more specific information about an idea. This sounds like. . . DEFINITIONS -- are restatements of an unfamiliar word or phrase to tell what it means. This sounds like…

3 STATISTICS and FACTS -- are the numbers (data) and information that help support your idea or argument. QUOTATIONS -- are words someone says that can help support your idea or argument. DESCRIPTIONS --are ways to create vivid images for the reader.

4 Simile: comparing two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”.
Metaphor:comparing two unlike things without using like or as. Calling one thing, another. Saying one thing is something else. Hyperbole: an exaggeration so dramatic, no one could believe it; overstate to emphasize a point.

5 Alliteration: the repeating of the same letter or sound, especially consonant sounds….including tongue twisters. Personification: giving human characteristics to things that are not human.

6 Onomatopoeia: the use of a word to describe or imitate a natural sound made by an object or action. Words that sound like what they mean. Oxymoron: words or phrases in which contradictory or opposite terms are used together
