Model A favors a large fraction of broadly tuned taste receptor cells (TRC), where many cells can recognize bitter compounds, sugars, and amino acids and, hence, express multiple receptor types (area outlined with bold line). Moreover, this model favors multiple signaling pathways, even within a taste modality, such as sweet taste (indicated by different fill patterns). Model B proposes that each TRC is dedicated to a single taste quality converging on a common signaling cascade.
