2 Interest Groups Private Organization of individuals working together to promote a common cause by trying to persuade public officials to respond Seek to influence public policy

3 Lobbyists Individuals who interact w/ elected officials to advocate for their group/cause Goal influence politicians & public policy Provide info to Congress

4 PAC- Political Action Committee
Organized collaboration of individuals that advocate for their cause/group by creating TV ads, reaching voters, working with elected officials and hiring lobbyists

5 Political Parties vs. Interest Groups (put at the bottom of your graphic organizer)
Nominate Interested in winning elections & controlling government Concerned w/ whole range of public affairs w/ everything of concern to voters Support candidates Concerned w/ controlling or influencing the policies of government Concentrate on issue(s) that most directly affect the interest of their members

6 Business Groups Support economic interests of business owners
Ex: Chamber of Commerce & Rotary

7 Labor Groups Support the issues of the workforce and individual workers Ex: AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations)

8 Agricultural Groups Support farmers and protect farming interests
Ex: The Grange

9 Professional Groups Represent highly- trained workers who need specialization to hold their job. Similar to labor unions Ex: Bar Association, N.E.A. (National Education Association), A.M.A. (American Medical Association)

10 Groups that Promote Causes
Advocate a large group of issues for the betterment of society in their opinion Ex: Sierra Club, A.C.L.U (American Civil Liberties Union)

11 Groups for the Welfare of Certain Individuals
Protect the individuals that are members of the group Ex: American Legion, N.A.A.C.P. (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)

12 Religious Organizations
Protect their faith and the issues of their fellow believers Ex: Christian Coalition

13 Single Issue Group Focused on the advancement of ONE ISSUE
Ex: MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), NRA (National Rifle Association), Pro-life/ Pro Choice
