1 Classifying Matter Section 2.1

2 What is matter? …everything around us!

3 Pure Substances: Element: the simplest form of matter
Atom: the smallest piece of an element Element Symbols

4 Pure Substances: Compound: elements combined in a “fixed proportion”
Na + Cl = NaCl Mg + Cl = MgCl2

5 Mixtures: Heterogeneous: parts are noticeably different

6 Mixtures: Homogeneous: parts are not easily distinguished
- Solution: one substance dissolved in another

7 Mixtures: Homogeneous: - Colloid: one substance suspended in another
(scatters light, appears cloudy)

8 Mixtures: Homogeneous or Heterogeneous?
- Suspension: one substance temporarily suspended in another

9 Separating Mixtures: Method is determined by the size of the particles
Very small, visible particles (like in suspensions) separated by filtration

10 Separating Mixtures: Dissolved particles (like in solutions) separated by distillation
