HANA Minimum Dataset Hannah Marder Cancer Manager UH Bristol

2 Overview What is ‘HANA’?
What are the ‘key fields’ and how are they chosen? What changes might there be in the future? What use can we make of these data locally?

3 What is HANA? HANA stands for ‘Head and Neck Audit’
It collects information about new and recurrent diagnoses of head and neck cancer in England All hospitals have to take part Every year the audit produces a report on its findings

4 What are the ‘key fields’?
The HANA dataset is large and collecting all items is not feasible Therefore a minimum dataset of ‘key fields’ has been agreed within UH Bristol We will aim to collect these ‘key fields’ to 100% completeness where applicable

5 What are the key fields? (2)
The key fields include: Basic tumour information (diagnosis, staging etc.) Pre-treatment diagnostic tests e.g. CT chest If patient has seen a CNS, dietician and SALT Care plan data (treatment intent, type of treatment planned, comorbidities) Dental assessment information

6 What are the key fields? (3)
Surgery details, including surgeon, complications and mortality Post resection histology discussion and HPV status Basic oncology information (start date, consultant and treatment intent)

7 How were the key fields chosen?
HANA publishes the key ‘audit questions’ it is trying to address All the data items needed to answer these questions are included All items needed for consultant level outcomes (surgeon mortality levels) are included Basic supporting items like diagnosis and staging which underpin all of items are included

8 Can the key fields change?
The key fields will be reviewed annually in August (HANA years run from November to October) Revisions can be made in to address new audit questions and requirements We can also consider any fields we would find useful locally, provided we do not significantly increase the number in any one period

9 Can we use the data locally?
As well as answering national audit questions, we can and should use the data locally The SSG should agree what audit questions it might like to answer We can agree remotely any extra key fields for next year Depending on the items involved, other Trusts may also need to agree to collect these to 100%

10 Summary A minimum dataset for HANA has been agreed at UH Bristol and will be collected to 100% The ‘key fields’ selected are those that answer audit questions and surgeon level outcomes We can review which fields are ‘key’ annually in August We can and should make use of these data locally too to help answer audit questions
