HHV 5014 NUTRACEUTICAL FORMULATION TECHNOLOGY Unit 4: Introduction To Solid Dosage Form Nutraceutical (4.1: Delivery System) Group members: Firdaus | Sofia | Nurainiza | Hafizah

2 INTRODUCTION Some drugs are inherently long lasting and require only once-a-day oral dosing to sustain adequate drug blood levels and the desired therapeutic effect. Multiple daily dosing is inconvenient for the patient and can result in missed doses, madeup doses, and noncompliance with the regimen. Extended-release tablets and capsules are commonly taken only once or twice daily, compared with counterpart conventional forms that may have to be taken three or four times daily to achieve the same therapeutic effect.

3 Advantages of extended-release dosage forms over conventional forms
Less fluctuation in drug blood levels Frequency reduction in dosing Enhanced convenience and compliance Reduction in adverse side effects Reduction in overall health care costs

4 Type of delivery system
Modified release Extended release Delayed release Repeat action Targeted release

5 Modified release Extended release Delayed release
Use to describe dosage forms having drug release features based on time, course, and/or location that are designed to accomplish therapeutic or convenience objectives not offered by conventional or immediate-release forms Extended release FDA defines an extended-release dosage form as one that allows a reduction in dosing frequency from that necessitated by a conventional dosage form, such as a solution or an immediate-release dosage form Delayed release is designed to release the drug at a time other than promptly after administration. The delay may be time based or based on the influence of environmental conditions, like gastrointestinal pH.

6 Repeat action Targeted release
Usually contain two single doses of medication, one for immediate release and the second for delayed release. Two-layer tablets, for example, may be prepared with one layer of drug for immediate release with the second layer designed to release drug later as either a second dose or in an extended-release manner. Targeted release Drug release directed toward isolating or concentrating a drug in a body region, tissue, or site for absorption or for drug action.

7 CONCLUSION Modified release Extended release Delayed release
Extended-release dosage forms is more preferred over conventional forms. There are 5 types of delivery system: Modified release Extended release Delayed release Repeat action Targeted release
