Program to give benefits to retirees, work comp, blind, disabled, and poverty-stricken mothers and children The National Labor Relations Board (Wagner Act) First time federal government recognized labor unions They were legalized and grew stronger Fair Labor Standards Act Set first minimum 25 cents/hour, 44 hour week, outlawed child labor; last piece of New Deal reforms Supreme Court Packing Supreme Court ruled several New Deal laws unconstitutional so FDR proposed legislation to add 6 new justices to the Court to help get his legislation passed Critics argued would upset separation of powers

8 The Death of FDR First and only President to serve more than 2 terms
Dies in 1945 and Truman takes over 22 Amendment passed in 1947, limiting presidential terms to 2 terms; ratified in 1951

9 Effects of New Deal Throughout 20s, Americans were generally confident that business would bring continued prosperity but depression hit anyway and hit some people hard Once New Deal programs were in place, Americans saw: Banking system stabilized Federal financial assistance payments helped farmers Work-relief programs provide jobs Social Security provides safety net The nation unified Power of presidency increases Government takes active role in economy Wagner Act protects workers and raises standard of living first time federal government interested in helping workers Minorities and women gain positions in government Indian Reorganization Act prohibited the government from further dividing Native American land

10 The New Deal Legacy The FDIC, the TVA, the SEC, and Social Security still in effect today Bridges, tunnels, dams, public buildings, and hospitals still exist today, along with many murals painted during this time under the WPA People maintained a surprising degree of confidence in the American system Great expansion of federal government & increased federal power over economy Did not end the depression, but greatest achievement was to restore a sense of hope
