2 Women and World War II Women joined the workforce. Before the war, only about 3 million worked in the U.S. Most were housewives and raised families. Desperate for workers to produce weapons, women replaced the men that went to war.

3 WOMEN MAKE GAINS Women enjoyed economic gains during the war, although many lost their jobs after the war Over 6 million women entered the work force for the first time Over 1/3 were in the defense industry.

4 Women and World War II Read the historian interviews
Take notes on the following questions: What changes did it bring in terms of women working? What was the effect of the war on women, the family, and marriage? Was there segregation in the workforce? What happened to working women at the end of the war? What was the legacy for working women at the end of the war? Does the war mark a turning point for women in the twentieth century or not?
