Success from the Start Strengthening Instruction through Professional Conduct and Classroom Management As you enter, please complete the “Professional Conduct or Not?” Survey 1 min Warm-up/Introductions Total: 1 min As participants enter, stand at the door and greet the participants. In the first few minutes, participants will complete the survey, “Professional Conduct or Not?” (paper copy) New teachers only will receive a copy of the text, “The First Days of School” Office of Organizational Development

8 Conduct Unbecoming Visit the link on the wiki to access a video clip.
As you view the clip, consider the following question: What observations can you make regarding professional conduct in the video clip? Discuss your observations with your small group. 12 min Total 26 min Participants will be able to access the video clips through the links on the wiki. Facilitators may assign video links in the wiki so that all of the videos are represented/watched. (Feel free to use a grouping strategy of your choice.) Participants view a video clip from TV or Movies that demonstrates concerns with professional conduct. In small groups, participants discuss the following question: What observations can you make regarding professional conduct in the video clip? Presenter asks, “Does anyone want to share what you talked about in your small groups?” Office of Organizational Development

9 How do you become a positive role model?
15 min Total 41 min Participants reflect independently on the following questions: How do you become a positive role model? How do you set teacher-student boundaries? What is professional dress for your role? How does the way that you dress impact what happens in the classroom? What role does “netiquette” play in the teaching profession? Participants discuss responses to the questions with a partner. Pairs share responses with the whole group. While participants share responses, presenter refers to the following list of talking points to ensure that they are addressed. Define your role… You are a Teacher. You are an advocate for your students. You are an active participant in your team decision-making process. You are NOT the parent. You are NOT a friend. Set boundaries by… Engaging in appropriate conversations. Complimenting and providing rewards and consequences appropriately. Become a positive role model by… Dressing professionally. Speaking and writing professionally, utilizing correct grammar. Being respectful and responsible. Maintaining confidentiality. Managing your on-line footprint. Planning for success. Netiquette Reply to within 24 hours. Think carefully about reply/reply all. Student names should never be in subject line. If wouldn’t put it on a bulletin board, don’t put it in an . Your work is for work. Carefully consider formatting (bold and all caps are considered shouting) Presenter explains that “Think-Pair-Share” is a strategy that teachers can use with their students to foster collaboration, student engagement and higher-order thinking. 10 BCPS Policy and Rule 4100 Purpose: To provide guidance to employees on BCPS’ expectations concerning employee conduct and responsibilities. Important Points to Consider: Standards: Employees will exhibit professional conduct that models responsible citizenship during work hours. Dress: All employees are expected to be neatly groomed and dressed in clothing suitable for their assignment. Advising: Employees shall refrain from discussing individual school/office and/or personnel. 10 min Total 51 min Distribute Policy and Rule Allow participants to read independently. (paper copy) Explain that BCPS Policy and Rule 4100 provide specific guidance regarding BCPS employee behavior. The consequences for employee noncompliance are explained in section X.A. Directions: Complete the self-assessment. Based on the assessment results, choose the station that you would like to visit first. If you are unable to complete all stations, you may access all station materials at any time through the wiki. 6 min to explain and set up – 50 min to complete stations Total 129 min Complete the self-assessment (paper handout) to identify strengths and needs in order to determine which stations you will visit and how long you will stay at each. If you are not able to complete all stations, the wiki (newteacherinductionbcps.pbworks.com) contains any materials you might need to finish each station or to refer back as necessary. Station 1: Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport Station 2: Establishing a Culture for Learning Station 3: Managing Classroom Procedures Station 4: Managing Student Behavior Station 5: Organizing Physical Space Participants with previous teaching experience will access materials through the wiki page named “Professional Conduct and Classroom Management Resources and Materials” and may want to consider stations 2, 4, and gives a look at BCPS policies, and 2 and 5 give a look at new initiatives. Participants with no previous teaching experience will access materials through the wiki page named, “Professional Conduct and Classroom Management Resources and Materials for NEW Teachers.” There will be a total of about 50 minutes for stations. If a participant wants to visit each station that would limit the time at each station to 10 minutes. Facilitator will designate areas in the room for each station so that participants may find colleagues with whom to discuss and reflect. NOTE: Facilitator may want to have participants stop about halfway through allotted station time to share with someone else what they have learned so far. This might give the participants a movement break and reinvigorate them to continue their customized learning. 18 a: Station 1 Creating and Environment of Respect and Rapport -Watch TED Talks Video, “Rita Pierson, Every Kid Needs a Champion” - -Respond to the following on the Padlet appropriate for your grade level or content. -We create an environment of respect and rapport by building relationships with and among students. Identify and describe ways to build these relationships with and among students. Read the following quotes. During instruction, an important challenge of a teacher’s skills occurs when students offer an idea, or a response to a teacher’s question, that is inadequate. How the teacher responds -- and how other students are permitted to respond -- sets the tone for how students are treated and therefore how they feel about themselves, both as people and as learners. Danielson, 65 High Impact Teaching Behaviors What we do as educators does matter in the lives of students: in both what we say to students and what we do not say to students. Highly effective teaching is the sum of all of the little details that are all correlated to behaviors. 2. Reflect on the following with an elbow partner. What is the most important behavior I exhibit that helps build a positive culture in my classroom? 3. Examine “High Impact Teaching (HIT) Behaviors 8-16” handout. 4. Watch and analyze the participant video. Look for HIT Behaviors or the lack thereof and the impact it has on students. Use the handout for note taking. 5. Reflect on how you will apply what you have learned to your own teaching practice. 6. New teachers only will be directed to information in the text, “The First Days of School.” 18c Station 3: Managing Classroom Procedures 1. Read the “Wong Resource” pp and/or watch the Youtube video, “3 Step Approach for Teaching Procedures.” 2. Contribute to the chart paper gallery of ideas by writing procedures for each of the following situations: Entering/Leaving the Classroom/Bathroom Quieting the Class Passing Out/Collecting Student Work/Make-up Work Responding/Asking Questions Student Collaboration/Group Work/Independent Work 3. Take a gallery walk to gather ideas (perhaps take a photo). 4. Reflect on the following: What is one strategy for establishing routines/procedures that you will implement in your classroom? 5. New teachers only will be directed to information in the text, “The First Days of School” in place of number 1. 18 d Station4: Managing Student Behavior 1. Review district expectations. Go to hover over Students tab and click on Student Handbook. Review the Student Code of Conduct, beginning on page 13. You may also want to review pages 2. Review PBIS School expectations. Go to hover over School button and click on SWPBIS for Beginners and read the page down to resources to get an overall idea of what PBIS is all about. 3. Become familiar with information about Restorative Justice through this link 4. Review Google Document containing techniques for classroom management. 5. Develop a plan to involve students in creating classroom rules that align with district and school expectations. 6. Share ideas with a critical friend and get feedback. 18e Station 5: Organizing Physical Space 1. Complete Traditional Classroom vs. Modern Classroom visual. Then, flip paper over to see a visual of a modern classroom. 2. Use some of the following resources to construct knowledge about the modern classroom. Watch “21st Century Learning Environments” Read Teacher as Architect, Chapter 1 Watch Foundations 3 #2 Society’s Needs and the new Ask. (on wiki) Use the Learning tab and click on Learner-Centered Environments on to view some photos. Watch a 6th grade teacher work through shifting her classroom to a learner centered environment. 3.
