2 Quick Write What do you know or think you know about poetry? Why do you think it’s important to learn about poetry and poetic forms?

3 Basic Definitions - Meter
Greek word for ‘measure’ Three meters used most often in English Accentual where the stresses are counted Syllabic where the syllables are counted Most common is ‘accentual syllabic’ where both the accents and syllables are counted and referred to as ‘feet’

4 Stanza A set group of lines in a poem
The two poems we’re reading have 4 stanzas

5 Basic Definition-Rhyme Scheme
A rhyme scheme is a regular pattern of rhyme, one that is consistent throughout the extent of the poem. The rhyme scheme is identified by letters.

6 Rhyme Schemes Labeled according to their rhyme sounds.
Every rhyme sound is given its own letter of the alphabet The 1st rhyme sound of a poem is designated as A The 2nd rhyme sound of a poem is designated as B The pattern continues with C, D, E, ect.
