1 Thrombophlebitis

2 What is it? Thrombophlebitis is when a blood clot in a vein causes an acute swelling of that vein This swelling can occur in superficial or deep veins Typically this only affects veins of the lower extremities

3 How does it develop? Thrombophlebitis is caused by a blood clot
These clots can be caused by: Bed rest Extended periods of sitting or inactivity Injury to the vein Inherited blood clotting disorder

4 Examination Some of the common signs and symptoms:
Redness Swelling Warmth Tenderness Pain If the vein is superficial, it may appear to be red and firm to the touch

6 Intervention Refer out to physician for more testing:
Ultrasound Imaging Blood test Possible treatments include Medication Surgery
