8. Subtracting numbers
Example: Ruben planted 168 seeds during a gardening project. Jana planted 191 seeds. How many more seeds did Jana plant?
To subtract, start by writing
Next, subtract the ones place. What do you do if the number on top is smaller than the bottom number?
Move to the tens place. Regroup if needed.
Finally, subtract the numbers in the hundreds place. How can you check your work?
Walk students through the concept of regrouping. Even though they are 4th graders some still struggle with this.
