the middle Eocene to early Oligocene Ellen E. Martin, Dept. of Geological Sciences , University of Florida Seawater Pb isotopes can be applied to interpret changes in continental weathering related to global climate change and to isolate the combined weathering and circulation signals inherent in Nd isotopic records, thereby strengthening the power of Nd isotopes as tracers of ocean circulation. Development of a clean, reproducible technique for extracting seawater Pb isotopes from marine sediments has allowed us to evaluate Pb isotopes during a transient excursion in Nd isotopes identified at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary in the Southern Ocean. Pb isotopic data support the theory that the excursion represents a pulse of continental weathering with a distinct source associated with the initiation of ice sheets on Antarctica. 206Pb/204Pb
