Columbus Four trips 1492,1493, 1498,1502. b. Amerigo Vespucci 1499, first European to explore Brazil and Amazon River. 1502, Americas named after him.

3 c. Magellan , was the first to lead an expedition around the world. He is killed in the Philippine Islands.

4 d. Cortez , he defeated the Aztec Empire(Moctezuma)

5 e. Ponce De Leon In 1523, explored Florida, looking for the fountain of youth. f. Pizarro 1527, Found Peru and 1532 conquers the Inca people.

6 g. De Soto 1539, explored across Southern half of North America (Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and the Carolina’s.)

7 h. Pedro Menendez de Aviles
, St. Augustine established. (oldest European settlement in North America)

8 II. French Verazano 1524 looking for Northwest Passage and discovered Newfoundland. b. Jacques Cartier Made three trips to present day Canada, using the St. Lawrence river.

9 c. Samual De Champlain Established 1st French Colony, Quebec, in 1608. 1609, names Lake Champlain, 1615 names Lake Huron.

10 d. Robert de Lasalle 1. Explores Mississippi, claiming land that would be Louisiana, and in 1718, New Orleans established.

11 III. Early Colonies a. Roanoke Disaster ( ) two attempts by Sir Walter Raleigh to colonizes fail.

13 c. Plymouth (1620) 1. Puritans, fleeing for religious freedom. 2. Mayflower Compact- all members of ship signed, agreeing to help one another for the betterment of colony. 3. Idea of self-government, without the King.

14 d. Massachusetts Bay Colony (1630)
Est. elected Governor, Deputy Governor, and assembly. e. Pennsylvania (1682) 1. William Penn is granted land from King Charles II.

15 IV. Conflicts and Natives
New Netherlands/New York , Dutch lose to English and give up colony. b. King Philips War (Metacon). , attacks on villages from R.I. to Maine destroy 12 towns, killing or wounding nearly 4000. 2. War ends in 1676 with death of Metacon.
