Objective: Create a criteria for just war. Compare with the Catholic Church’s criteria for just war. Main Build A Burger Alternate Chicken Dippers with Sauce Sides Baked Beans, Fries, Fruit Agenda: Prayer Do Now: Share your homework answers with one another. Evaluate your partner’s answer. Do you agree with them? Why or why not? Create a class criteria for just war. We will compare this later with the Church’s teachings. Catholic Church Just War Homework: none

2 Morning Prayers - Thursday
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. AMEN (Join me in offering our day to God.) My God, I thank you for the gift of another day to praise you. I offer you all my prayers works, joys, and sufferings today. Amen. (Let us now place ourselves before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament) May the heart of Jesus, in the Most Blessed Sacrament, be praised, adored, and loved with grateful affection, at every moment, in all the tabernacles of the world, until the end of time. O Sacrament Most Holy, O Sacrament Divine, all praise and all thanksgiving, be every moment Thine. (Let us pray.) Dear Heavenly Father, grant me the grace to know the difference between right and wrong, and the courage always to do what is right, Through Christ, our Lord. AMEN  In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. AMEN (Please stand for the pledge) I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

3 What conditions must exist for the government to have a good excuse to send your family members to war? Country threatened beyond diplomacy – you’ve tried talking If family members are trained and able Safe job If it’s against many other enemies. If the other country is threatening us. If innocent lives are being threatened Land? If we went to war, what if they use weapons of mass destruction? Threatening our families.

A just war is when it is right to go to war.

5 Catholic Church’s Just War Criteria
Must be decided by the people in charge. The damage being inflicted by the aggressor is grave, lasting, and certain. All other options have been explored. War as defensive measure must have serious prospect of success. It cannot produce more or greater evil. There is a duty to protect and help innocent victims. Helpers must never try to influence who they are helping. There is a moral obligation to intervene when basic human rights are being seriously violated. Economic sanctions must be used carefully and not to punish. It cannot just affect everyone (indiscriminate). The purpose has to be clear and obtainable.

Facts about the causes of the American Revolution: Intolerable Acts: Punish the colonists: Stopped trade for Boston, forced colonists to house soldiers, more taxes No taxation without representation – colonists could not vote or decide who their leaders would be Everything was taxed Washington, Gage, Cornwallis, LaFayette, Adams, Jefferson  Rich and well educated men Only about 30-40% of the Am. colonists wanted to go to war. After the war, many colonists moved to British controlled Canada The British was the strongest army at the time Continental Congress tried boycotting and making peace (Olive Branch Petition) before officially declaring Independence.
