1 Writing Warmup: 11/10/09 If you have children someday, what are the 2 most important lessons you will teach them? Why? How did you learn these lessons?

2 Background Info: Haiku
Haiku originated in Japan. Similar types of poetry began in Japan in the 1600’s but actual “haiku” were not formed until the late 1800’s. Now, haiku are written in many other languages, including English. Haiku are often about seasons and nature.

Falling to the ground, I watch a leaf settle down In a bed of brown. It’s cold—and I wait For someone to shelter me And take me from here. Lost in the forest . So wild yet so beautiful . So beautifully wild. Snow lay on the street . It crunched underneath my feet. Footprints in the snow. There is a small mouse, He lives in a windy mill, He is so happy. I walk in the park, The wind is blowing past, fast I lost my new hat.

5 Structure of a Haiku Haiku are one stanza, made up of three lines.
The first line has 5 syllables. The second line has 7 syllables. The third line has 5 syllables.

6 Syllable Practice: How many syllables does each word/line have?
