Challenges to change --themes from recent discussions of school health reorganization Tools to assess need & document resources Model programs that can pull resources together Initial steps that can lead to more effective health programs at school

3 Themes from Recent Studies
Many school health programs are not in good shape A “silo” mentality limits impact of school health programs and constrains partnerships School health programs are not politically strong The absence of long-term plans or a roadmap for the future impedes program growth

Federal mandates -- schools must provide these services Affects a large number of students, 5.5 million in 1999. These are the health services that are of greatest concern

Find some friends: Multiple school health components mean multiple potential allies Take your time -- scan the landscape, identify people outside the schools who care, ie pediatricians, community health advocates Look to local foundations for support for a year-long study process
