1 Chapter 15 The Atmosphere

2 Chap 15, Sect 3 (Global Winds and Local Winds)
Objectives: Explain the relationship between air pressure and wind direction. Describe global wind patterns. Explain the causes of local wind patterns.

3 Equator – warm, less dense air rises and creates an area of LOW pressure.
Poles – cold, more dense air sinks and creates an area of HIGH pressure. How does air move?

4 Air moves down the alphabet from H pressure to L pressure
Air moves down the alphabet from H pressure to L pressure! (A – air and alphabet…..H comes before L) What is wind?

5 What are some common global wind patterns?
Prevailing Westerlies found between 30° and 60° latitude travel from West to East carries the air (for the most part) across the United States What are some common global wind patterns?

7 Doldrums located where the trade winds of the two hemispheres meet at the equator means “dull” or “sluggish” an area of Low pressure

8 How do local winds form? Sea and Land Breezes
