1. BROKEN BONES There are different kinds of broken bones.
Simple or Closed Fractures
Compound or Open Fractures

2. Simple or Closed Fractures
The broken bone is not visible through the skin.
An example of this is a greenstick fracture. It is called this because the x-ray barely shows a fracture and it looks like a splintered twig

3. Compound or Open Fracture
A bone may separate partially or completely from the other half.
The bone can protrude through the skin
Bones can break in more than one place.

4. Bones (cont)
Bones in children are more pliable and may resist breakage more than bones in adults.
Children’s bones are still growing, especially the long bones of their arms and legs.
Damage to the ends of these bones should be looked at carefully because of the risk of stunting the bone’s growth.

5. SPRAINS and STRAINS
A sprain occurs when the ligaments, which hold the bones together, are overstretched and partially torn.
Simply overstretching any part of the musculature is called a strain.
Sprains and strains cause swelling and pain.
There may be bruises around the injured area.
