4 Lego Mindstorms EV3 Programmable brick “The Brains”: Motors:
Sensors (touch, color, gyro, ultrasonic)

5 Step 1: Build the Car Build the car using the instruction booklet, pages 7-38.

6 Step 2: Program the car to move!
Start Lego Mindstorms EV3 (File/New Project) Drag in the 3rd (Move Steering) block Change the number of rotations to 20 Try Sound and Display blocks (click on white field at top to choose files) File/Save to name your program Connect brick and download program. Click here to download to the brick.

7 Step 3: Add Ultrasonic Sensor
The ultrasonic sensor can sense an object at a certain distance in front of it. Follow the instruction booklet pages

8 Step 4: Add Sensor to Program
Click on orange control tab. Drag in a Switch Block. Click on sensor image and choose Ultrasonic Sensor, Compare, and Distance Inches. Change threshold < 50 to 4 inches.

9 Step 5: Turn if Obstacle At the top section of the switch (if obstacle < 4” away): Add a “Move Steering” block. Change first field to “On”. Set steering to 100. At the bottom section of the switch (no obstacles): Drag in your original move block and change it to “On”.

10 Step 6: Infinite Loop To repeatedly avoid obstacles:
Add a “Loop” block from the orange tab. Put your blocks into the loop.

11 Now we can build an obstacle course!
Step 7: Download & Test! Now we can build an obstacle course!
