1 Unit 1 Test Review

2 Most of the materials that plants need in order to grow come from water and _______
Air

3 What could you do to provide the best evidence that plants require water for growth ?
Grow 100 plants under identical conditions, but providing water to only 50 of the plants, then measuring the growth of all of the plants.

4 As a plant grows, it gains mass
As a plant grows, it gains mass. What provides the most matter that a plant uses for its growth? Gases in the air

5 Grow some plants in containers with nothing but water.
What could you do to support the idea that plants do not need soil to grow? Grow some plants in containers with nothing but water.

6 True or False – Particles that make up matter are too small to be seen with only our eyes?

7 What tool is necessary to examine the particles that make up matter?
Microscope

8 Plants get the food they use for energy and growth by
Making it from Sunlight

9 The process by which plants make food requires water and what else ?
Gases in the air

10 Animals get the energy they need for growth and repair from where?
Sunlight

11 Plants use photosynthesis to meet their survival needs by doing what ?
Changing light Energy into carbohydrates

12 What do plants need in order to live and grow? Explain your answer.
Plants require energy from the Sun in order to produce the carbohydrates they need. They also need water from the ground and carbon dioxide.

13 Ana says that plants require mostly air and water to live and grow
Ana says that plants require mostly air and water to live and grow. Peter says that plants require mostly soil to live and grow. Who do you agree with and why? I agree with Ana because we learned from doing our experiment in science class that plants do not have to have soil to grow. While it is helpful, plants get most of their requirements from only air and water.

14 40 minutes

15 A student is doing an investigation with a capped syringe
A student is doing an investigation with a capped syringe. What observation provides evidence that the air filling the syringe is matter? The plunger cannot be pushed all the way to the end.

16 The diagram shows a transfer of energy in the ecosystem
The diagram shows a transfer of energy in the ecosystem. What belongs on the blank in the first box of the diagram? Sun

17 An incomplete diagram of the process of photosynthesis is provided
An incomplete diagram of the process of photosynthesis is provided. What is the missing component that correctly replaces the question mark to complete the diagram? Water

18 What data from this diagram supports the claim that soil does not provide most of the materials a plant needs to grow? The willow gained mass, but the soil lost almost no mass.

19 A diagram showing the transfer of energy between members of an ecosystem is provided. The information in this diagram supports which of the following ideas? A. all organisms depend on other organisms for food. B. The original source of energy for all organisms is the sun B

20 Which of the following would provide the best evidence that air is made of matter? A. Making a small hole in a tire and measuring the amount of time it takes for it to become flat B. Comparing the mass of an empty balloon to the mass of an inflated balloon B
