1 NEUTRALIZATION ACID BASE NEUTRALZATION
The process by which an acid or base is made neutral. ACID BASE (characterized by H+ ions) (characterized by OH- ions) Mix them together in equal amounts (same # of H+ and OH – ions) NEUTRALZATION

2 IF…… …THE SOLUTION IS NEUTRAL
IMPORTANT! IF…… …THE SOLUTION IS NEUTRAL ALSO… By adding a base to an acid you can neutralize the acid (or lower the concentration of acid) By adding an acid to a base you can neutralize the base (or lower the concentration of base)

3 EXAMPLES Limestone (base) used to treat acid waste (acidic)
Baking soda (base) used to neutralize common household acid spills Bile in liver is added to food to adjust acidity of mixture Anti-acids like Rolaids are used to lower acid content in stomach

4 CHEMICAL REACTIONS When neutralizing acids with bases or vice versa, the product is a salt and water NaOH (sodium hydroxide) + HCl (hydrochloric acid) NaCl (sodium chloride) + H2O (base) (acid) (salt) (water) REACTANTS PRODUCTS

5 PRACTICE PROBLEMS Study guide, Module 3, page 34, 35 WORKSHEET # 9
