1 Winds Chapter 16 Section 3

2 What is wind? Horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of lower pressure Caused by differences in air pressure Most differences are caused by unequal heating in the atmosphere

3 What is wind? Air over a heated surface becomes less dense and air pressure decreases Dense air from a nearby cooler area with higher pressure will move in and force warm air to rise

4 Measuring Wind Described by speed and direction
A wind vane indicates direction An anemometer indicates speed

5 Wind Chill Factor How cold it feels due to the wind
Wind removes body heat thus feeling colder

6 Local Winds Winds caused by unequal heating in a small area
Sea Breeze – blows from a lake or ocean Land breeze – flows from land to a lake or ocean

7 Global Winds Polar Easterlies Prevailing Westerlies Horse Latitudes
NE Trade Winds Equatorial Doldrums SE Trade Winds Prevailing Westerlies Polar Easterlies
