3 Why is STDY CLASS LINKED TO MATH?
Statistics About Math Classes1 Developmental Education (pre-college level classes) Affects 80% of students entering community colleges Underrepresented student groups in developmental classes 87% of both Latino and African American students 70 % of Asian American 74 % of white students 86% low-income Developmental sequences are lengthy, delaying students’ college careers Math takes an average of 2.5 terms to complete the sequence English students take an average of 1.9 terms Courses cannot be applied toward a degree Attrition (drop outs) is high 44 % of developmental math students successfully complete the sequence 17 % of students who start four levels below college level in math complete the sequence 1Mejia, M. 4 Why do so many students not pass their math classes?
Many reasons, but usually any combination of the following: Generally ‘at-risk’ students don’t know they are at risk, what they need, or what they need to do to succeed For many, math is just a hard subject to learn Many don’t put out enough time and effort to succeed in math classes Most don’t plan enough time for homework (You need 18 hours per week for math) When they do try to study, most don’t have effective study strategies Most just go to class, then home, and don’t take the time to identify and develop study partners/groups

5 Why do so many students not pass their math classes?
Many reasons, but usually any combination of the following: (Continued) Maintaining interest and commitment to math success is a challenge because: Some are disappointed with their assessment scores and don’t think they need to start at the level where placed Many people don’t like math Some students have a hard time learning from some teachers’ teaching style Many don’t see the connection between math and their education/career goals Many get discouraged by the length of time and amount of work it takes to pass math classes Most are too distracted by ‘life’ (work, family, social life, problems, etc.) to focus on math College is an ‘emotional roller-coaster ride,’ so many get frustrated, overwhelmed, and/or give up, when faced with challenges Most don’t know what help is available, where to find it, or bother to use it
