14. All students must be required to wear school uniforms because they help to decrease crime and violence within schools. (T) Many gangs use different colored clothing and accessories to identify who is in their gang and who is in other gangs. (C) According to the article, “Why School Uniforms?”, “uniforms add measures of safety in identical dress,” by having students, “no longer identified by their ‘colors’”. (E) By having students wear the same exact outfit every day of the week, they are forced to hide any sort of gang affiliation. Students can breathe a sigh of relief because there is less tension in the school’s atmosphere. When there is less tension and fear of violence, students are more willing to interact with one another, but most importantly, they feel safer. School uniforms help students identify with the school instead of with specific gangs, which leads to a more peaceful learning environment. Uniforms help to protect students from unnecessary violence and stress. (C)
