1 Science Starter 4/22/15 Grab Notebook from bin
Add Unit 5:Atmosphere & Weather As you climb up a mountain, do you expect to experience increasing or decreasing temperatures? What if that mountain was tall enough to extend into space. What changes would you experience in temperature?

2 Classroom Procedures When you enter the classroom, earbuds and cell phones must be AWAY You come in and go to the bin to grab your notebook silently You have a seat in your assigned seat silently You begin your Do Now silently and independently Once time is up, you put your pencils down, and track the speaker! This task is also done silently and independently

3 Cell Phone Policy Beginning of class, cell phone away
If I see a cell phone when class begins (charging, in hand, music) I will ask for it ONE TIME Turn it over and I will return it to you after class Don’t turn it over and I will write a referral (still expected to put phone away for remainder of class) You may only take out cell phones if I say it is allowed Must put them away/on top of desk if I am talking I should never hear your music/ringtone/any noise

4 What determines the layers of the atmosphere?
Essential Question What determines the layers of the atmosphere?

5 Objective Students will be able to identify the different layers of the atmoshphere by completing a graphic organizer

6 What are the layers of the atmosphere in ascending order (from the ground up)
What are the boundaries between the different layers of the atmosphere? In which layers does temperature increase with elevation? In which layers does temperature decrease with elevation?

7 CORNERS! Layers of the Atmosphere
For each of the following questions, guess the atmosphere layer that you think is described by the statement presented. After each question is posed, you will write the statement in the correct layer column

8

9 Troposphere The layer where WE live Weather happens here

10 Thermosphere Temperature increases as you get higher (sun’s rays slow down) Site of Aurora Borealis (ionosphere)

11 Stratosphere Contains the ozone layer
Temperatures increase as you go up (ozone traps heat)

12 Mesosphere Coldest layer (down to -90oC)
Very few gas molecules (low pressure)

13 Satellites orbit here (exosphere)
Thermosphere Too few gas molecules for thermometer to accurately measure temperature Satellites orbit here (exosphere)

14 Troposphere Earth’s heat warms the air, so temperature decreases as you go higher up Extends 7 miles up Most dense layer

15 Stratosphere Where airplanes fly Extends 7-30 miles

16 In which layer do humans live?
In which layer is the ozone layer found? In which layer does weather occur? Which layer is the coldest? Which layer contains the Aurora Borealis?

17 Unit 5: Atmosphere & Weather
Grab a book and turn to Chapter 17 Complete both of sides the sheet introducing the atmosphere These should be completed (front & back), stapled, and placed in your notebook under Unit 5
