Steve Averett, GISP GIS & Special Projects Manager, City of Greensboro Sarah Wray, GISP Geospatial Data Manager, NCDOT DATA Data, data, everywhere And all the drives did shrink But none of it in sync METADATA SHARE NC GIS Conference February 26, 2015 GeoMaxim

2 ----------------------------------------------------
1994: FGDC adopts CSDGM as the federal standard 1998: NC adopts CSDGM as the state standard 2003: ISO publishes first 191** spatial metadata standards 2010: FGDC adopts ISO 191** as federal standard 2012: SMAC forms an ad hoc committee to review NC metadata standards 2014: November 20th, GICC formally adopts the NC State & Local Gov. Metadata Profile, compliant with ISO 191** There is increasing demand for robust/operational metadata to support: management of increasing numbers of geospatial capital assets data access, exchange and reuse via geospatial catalogs such as: NCOneMap – statewide GISInventory – national Data.gov – federal The History 3

3 --------------------------------
Objective Carve down the standard into essential elements that support: standards compliance data discovery data reuse Local & Provincial Government State Government University Federal Government Issues which standard to use? how much information/education to include to support implementation? how to format a profile? Private Sector Team Metadata The Committee 3

4 The Problem A GOOD METADATA RECORD TO FIND REQUIRES
IS HARD (and make) Good metadata is hard to find (and make) Requires: learning time and effort re$ources accountability commitment As a result, many organizations produce minimal, if any, metadata REQUIRES Time and effort Learning new standards and tools Re$ources Accountability As a result: many organizations produce minimal, if any, metadata The Problem 2

5 ---------------------------------------------------- The Solution
ISO Required Process: Include all ISO & CSDGM mandatory elements Add ISO elements essential to meet operational requirements Identify non-mandatory elements: CSDGM-only required ISO elements specific elements don’t apply to all types of data CSDGM Required ISO Essential The Solution 5
