A Brief Bio Born on March 30, 1746 in Fuendetodos, Spain
Began studying painting as a teenager, he studied in Rome In the 1770s Goya was hired by the Spanish royal court where he painted the royal family and local nobility He created tapestry cartoons (designs) but made a name for himself as a portrait artist known for his attention to detail Goya created art to record history and make commentary on political and social events He painted in the style known as Romanticism Died on April 16, 1828 in Bordeaux, France

Fun Facts In 1792 Goya became completely deaf permanently
He married Josefa Bayeu, together they had many children but only one son (Xavier) survived to adulthood In 1799 Goya published the Caprichos which were a series of etchings that satirized human weakness Goya never tried to beautify a personal portrait – he portrayed things as he saw them, not how people wanted them Political tensions rose and Goya willingly went into exile in France in 1824
