1 Cell Theory Notes Please take out you chapter 3 packet. Flip to page 104 and complete the My Planet Diary

2 New Procedures Due to the misuse of classroom rules, there will no longer be bathroom time for the first and last 5 minutes of class. ALL students should be in their seats with their bellwork out when the bell rings. You need to go before the bell rings.

3 Why are cells important?

4 Cells Obtain oxygen Obtain food and water Get rid of waste

5 Discovery of Cells Cells were discovered when
the microscope was improved. In 1665, Robert Hooke cut a thin slice of cork and looked at it under his microscope. Hooke thought the cork seemed to be made up of empty boxes, which he named cells.

6 Development of Cell Theory
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek 1st person to see microorganisms Created a simple microscope Able to magnify up to 300X

7 Development of Cell Theory
In 1830s, Matthias Schleiden used a microscope to study plants and concluded that all plants are made of cells

8 Development of Cell Theory
Theodor Schwann, after observing different animal cells, concluded that all animals are made up of cells.

9 Development of Cell Theory
Several years later, Rudolf Virchow hypothesized that cells divide to form new cells. Virchow proposed that every cell came from a cell that already existed. These men’s ideas combined makes up the cell theory.

10 Multiple Choice Who concluded that all animals are made of cells?
Hooke Schleiden Schwann Virchow

11 Multiple Choice Who was the first person to see microorganisms under the microscope? Robert Hooke Anton Van Leeuwenhoek Matthias Schleiden Rudolf Virchow

12 Development of Cell Theory
Eventually, they combined their ideas and became convinced that all living things are made of cells.

13 The Cell Theory All living things are composed of cells
The cell is the basic unit of structure and function. All cells are produced from other cells

14 Multiple Choice Which of the following is NOT a function of cells?
Obtain oxygen Eliminate threats Obtain food and water Get rid of waste

15 Multiple Choice Which of the following statements is NOT part of cell theory? All cells are produced from other cells Cells can absorb food and oxygen All living things are composed of cells Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things
