An Introduction to Middle School

Introduce yourself (counselor) and where you are located on campus Let students know the services you( counselor) will provide. Inform the students of the upcoming events on and off campus that are sponsored by the counseling team. Use this slide to introduce key site staff This slide may include all staff members if the presentation is collaborative. The point of the presentation is to acclimate students to their middle school site and staff who support students.

3 Tips for a Successful Start
We are glad you are here so keep coming! Attendance……..It Matters!!!!!!! Attend everyday and be on time Time missed = information missed Review your school bell schedule and class schedule! Emphasize attendance! Review the schools bell schedule Have students review their class schedule. Have copies available for them If your school has a planner, have them use their planner. 4 Tips for a Successful Start
Come Dressed for Success! Dress Code: Most Common Violations ( Fill in your schools most frequent violations) Talk with your vice-principals and list the most common violations for your school. Tips: You can use students to role play. Have students demonstrate clothing in dress code as well as in violation of dress code.

5 Transportation Insert your school’s transportation route
Handout the bus schedule for your middle school. Import into the slide. Bus schedules can be found at Inform students who ride the bus of the school site location of drop off points in the morning, and where to catch the bus after school. Inform the students of expected behavior while riding the bus and the consequences of poor behavior.

Time and Location Lunch is served Time and location Lunch applications are available ( Have some to handout) Inform the students of the rules and behaviors while waiting in line for lunch. Inform the students of expected behaviors for cleaning up the lunch table and disposing their meal tray.

7 Middle School Classes Every class you are registered for will prepare you for high school All classes prepare you for High School and High School Graduation. 230 credits are required for High School graduation. 9 High School Graduation
Fresno Unified School District requires 230 credits to graduate Most courses are worth 5 credits a semester A grade “C” or better is needed to receive credit . Complete all homework Ask for help when you need it In High School passing grades equal credits. Please fill this in with homework help programs and social emotional assistance. Names and locations. Please make sure students have a list of homework help, emotional/social help, names and locations.

11 Get involved! Sports (List fall sports)
Maintain a strong GPA to continue to participate in sports 2.3 GPA and above Encourage all students to be involved early. Teach them to track volunteer work with date, name of activity, type of activity and verification by signature of an adult.

12 Get Involved! Clubs and Organization
Consider your interests and abilities Select 2-3 to be committed to Do not become overly involved so that your activities take away from study time Serve in a leadership role (e.g. President, Treasure, etc.) Encourage students to get INVOLVED!
