1 Climate action in the international shipping sector
Beatriz Yordi Director European and International Carbon Markets DG Climate

2 Climate action in international shipping
Content 1. Global action on climate change; international momentum 2. International Shipping 3. Pivotal role of ports Insert your logo here

3 Climate action in international shipping
1. Global action on climate change - international momentum (1) Paris Agreement; well below 2°C, pursuing efforts towards 1.5°C. All countries and sectors to contribute No time to lose EU commitments Reduce GHG emissions by at least 40% below 1990 levels by 2030 Sectors covered by the EU Emission Trading System (ETS); 43% compared to 2005 Other sectors, like transport; 30% compared to 2005 Insert your logo here

4 Climate action in international shipping
1. Global action on climate change - international momentum (2) International Aviation Agreement in 2016 on a global market based off setting scheme (CORSIA) International Shipping No target yet! Around 2,2% percent of total GHG emissions in 2015 Strong growth of demand expected Risk growing share of global emissions in coming decades (if no further action) While other sectors are reducing Insert your logo here

2. International shipping (1) – Progress to date + reduction potential However, between 2008 – 2015: Around 35% efficiency gain Over 10% GHG emissions reduction While transport demand grew (8.200MT > MT) Plus: Further efficiency gain possible, also using existing technology and operational measures And low or zero carbon fuels for the longer term This is the context for the discussions on the IMO GHG reduction strategy in April next. 2. International shipping (2) – IMO reduction strategy IMO strategy on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of ships IMO needs to decide in April on a strategy that includes: Ambition! A Work Plan! And that prioritizes measures that can reduce emissions quickly! Insert your logo here

7 Climate action in international shipping
2. International shipping (3) – IMO reduction strategy Ambition 2008 as the peak year (as proposed by industry) Energy Efficiency (gr CO2 t-mile) 50% by 2030 (compared to 2008), pursuing efforts towards 70% (remember, 35% efficiency gain by 2015!) Absolute reductions 70% by 2050 (compared to 2008), pursuing efforts towards 100% Insert your logo here

8 Climate action in international shipping
2. International shipping (4) – IMO reduction strategy Measures – Work Plan Urgent need for action Planning needed to develop, agree and implement reduction measures Priority; measures with quick impacts Also prepare for medium and long term measures Insert your logo here

9 Climate action in international shipping
3. Role Ports (1) Central position in designing efficient logistics Number of very useful initiatives in the recent past, like: The Environmental Ship Index; and Onshore Power Supply And IAPH co-sponsored submissions to the IMO proposing an ambitious reduction strategy Insert your logo here

10 Climate action in international shipping
3. Role Ports (2) The World Port Sustainability Programme is the next step Allowing ports to increase effiency and sustainibility Within ports themselves And within the logistical chain The EU Monitoring, Reporting and Verification regulation can support efforts Provide accurate aggregated data on CO2 emissions from ships in EEA ports Ship owners to report CO2 emissions at individual ship level Improve the incentive schemes, like the Environmental Ship Index Insert your logo here

11 Climate action in international shipping
Role Ports (3) Around 90% of urban population in the EU exposed to damaging air pollutants Coastal and port areas affected by emissions from nearby sea traffic and port calling ships Clear need for port communities to take action to reduce emissions The WPSP is an important step. Action by all players necessary. Hope and trust we can count on IAPH to continue to actively support the quest for an ambitious and meaningful IMO GHG reduction strategy And to more broadly play its part in greening of the logistical chain Insert your logo here
