1 This section, we will be talking about the moons of the planets

2 Many Moons -Although Earth, the planet that we live on only has 1 moon, most other planets have many moons. -Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, has 63 known moons. Our solar system has many moons

3 Classification of a Moon
-Before the invention of the telescope, people only knew the moon as a mysterious round object in the sky. -Today, a moon is classified as an object that is able to make a full orbit around a planetary object. -A moon is also sometimes called a “natural satellite”. Hey guys, this is how we classify a moon.

4 238,900 miles!!!!! How Far is the Moon?
Although it appears that the moon is very close to the earth on some nights, the moon is actually 238,900 miles away. 238,900 miles!!!!! How far do you think the moon is from us?

5 Some Moons of Jupiter -Jupiter has a total of 63 moon.
-The four largest moons are called the Galilean moons, which were discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei. -The largest Galilean is Ganymede, which is the 9th largest object in the solar system. Jupiter has a total of 63 moons. The four largest ones are called the Galilean moons.

6 The Other 3 Moons The 3 other moons of Jupiter are Io(first picture), Europa(second picture), and Callisto(third). These are the 3 other moons.

7 Io -Io is the most volcanically active of the moons of Jupiter.
-Io’s whole entire surface is covered in sulfur. -Io travels in an elliptical orbit because of Jupiter’s immense gravity. This is Io, the most volcanically active one of the 4.

8 Europa -Europa’s surface is mostly water ice. It is thought to be covering an ocean or slushy ice. -Europa is said to have twice as much water as Earth does. -It intrigues scientists because it can potentially be “inhabited”. Europa’s surface is mostly covered with ice and water. It is believed to have twice the amount of water as Earth.

9 Callisto -The surface of Callisto is extremely cratered and ancient.
-This shows evidence that Callisto had been through a lot of meteoritical activity throughout history. Callisto is extremely cratered, and it shows evidence of heavy meteorical activity.

10 Reaching the Moon -Due to the moon’s extreme distance from Earth, it was extremely hard for anyone to get to the moon. Reaching the moon sounded extremely unbelievable, but we eventually did it.

11 First Man on the Moon -In July of 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to step foot on the moon aboard the Apollo 11. Neil Armstrong became the first man to land on the moon in 1969.
