1 The Early Ministry & Selection of Disciples
Lesson 6

2 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH
John 5:1-47 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH The response: “Immediately the man became well, and took up his pallet and began to walk” Where did he immediately walk? Verse 14; Luke 17:5-10 The problem for the Jews who witnessed this? “Now it was the Sabbath on that day.”

3 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH
John 5:1-47 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH What was the Jews’ initial objection to the man who’d been healed? “It is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.” “Permissible” according to whom? Their traditions. Mark 7:1-13 What was God’s instruction regarding the Sabbath? Exodus 20:8-10; Jeremiah 17:21; Nehemiah 13:15 The Mishnah provides a list of thirty-nine works forbidden on the Sabbath day. The list permits the carrying of a living man on a couch, since the couch itself is considered secondary, i.e., it is regarded as essential to the man’s conveyance. But to carry the bed itself was not considered necessary, so was impermissible. SABBATH They had invented many prohibitions respecting the Sabbath of which we find nothing in the original institution. Some of these prohibitions were fantastic and arbitrary, in the number of those "heavy burdens and grievous to be borne" while the latter expounders of the law "laid on men's shoulders." Comp. Matt 12:1-13; John 5:10. That this perversion of the Sabbath had become very general in our Saviour's time is apparent both from the recorded objections to acts of his on that day and from his marked conduct on occasions to which those objections were sure to be urged. Matt 12:1-16; Mark 3:2; Luke 6:1-5; 13:10-17; John 6:2-18; 7:23; 9:1-34. Christ's words do not remit the duty of keeping the Sabbath, but only deliver it from the false methods of keeping which prevented it from bestowing upon men the spiritual blessings it was ordained to confer. 4 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH
John 5:1-47 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH The Jews ask the man who told him it was ok to carry his pallet on the Sabbath? He responded that “He who made me well” told me to do so. Evidently the man healed presumed that He who could miraculously heal him had the authority to direct him to do so. The Mishnah provides a list of thirty-nine works forbidden on the Sabbath day. The list permits the carrying of a living man on a couch, since the couch itself is considered secondary, i.e., it is regarded as essential to the man’s conveyance. But to carry the bed itself was not considered necessary, so was impermissible. 5 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH
John 5:1-47 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH The follow up question by the Jews was: What man told you that? Should they not have had questions about the miraculous abilities of the One who healed him? Interesting – did the man who was healed know who healed him? The Mishnah provides a list of thirty-nine works forbidden on the Sabbath day. The list permits the carrying of a living man on a couch, since the couch itself is considered secondary, i.e., it is regarded as essential to the man’s conveyance. 6 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH
John 5:1-47 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH Later, Jesus meets the man he healed in the temple (why would Jesus find him there? Isaiah 38:19; Luke 17:15; Acts 3:7- 8) and says to him: “Behold you have become well; do not sin anymore so that nothing worse happens to you.” The Mishnah provides a list of thirty-nine works forbidden on the Sabbath day. The list permits the carrying of a living man on a couch, since the couch itself is considered secondary, i.e., it is regarded as essential to the man’s conveyance. But to carry the bed itself was not considered necessary, so was impermissible. 7 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH
John 5:1-47 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH What did Jesus mean by this? He needed to lay aside his sinful practices and repent. John 8:11; 1 Corinthians 15:34; Ephesians 4:22 There is a fate worse than being an invalid in this life. 2 Thessalonians 1:9, “… eternal destruction away from the presence of the Lord …”

8 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH
John 5:1-47 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH The man told the Jews it was Jesus … “who made him well” What was the Jews’ original objection? “For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath” What did that persecution entail?

9 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH
John 5:19-47 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH What was Jesus’ response to the persecution? Verse 17, Jesus said that “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.” Not “our Father.” Matthew 6:9; John 2:16

10 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH
John 5:19-47 THE HEALING OF A MAN ON THE SABBATH How was God the Father working until now? Who did the Jews understand Jesus to refer to when He said “My Father”? John 2:16; 20:17 “For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He was … calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.”
