Region of Peel Pop. 1.4 million Mississauga Brampton Caledon 330,000 homes Bi-weekly Carts The Region of Peel has a population of approxmately 1.4 million We have 3 lower tier municipalities that make up the Region of Peel Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon In January 2016 the Region of Peel introduced a new Bi-weekly Cart based collection program , recycling and garbage pickups biweekly and organics pickup weekly. 35,000 residents remain on a bag based system due to inabililty of collection vehicles to get into the townhouse complexs. Our Curbside collection contract services 340,000 collection points broken up into 3 major zones. North, South East and South West We have 2 collection contractors Emterra who is responsible for the North and South West Collection zones and Progressive which is responsible for the South East Collection Zones. Collection Data Collected approximately 16 tonnes By Zones our North and South West Zones collected the most over the 2 weeks being approx 9.1 tonnes The South East zone saw a 1.2 tonne decrease in week 2 ROP was batteries collected by our Curbside representatives that collected batteries that residents put out on the wrong collection week MWA Spring Workshop May 2016

Contamination Data There was Approx 6% contamination that was removed from the battery bags From that 6 % the largest % was Wet Cell batteries primarily sealed lead acid batteries from computer back up or kids power wheel toys which was 54% The second largest was Rechargeable batteries which was 42% by weight and was mainly cell phone batteries and lap top batteries We did not remove the smaller rechargeable batteries such as the AAA or AA MWA Spring Workshop May 2016

Program Logistics 2 x year spring and fall Bags distributed Place on organics cart Recycling week Processed at Fewster Our Council approved a one year pilot to be completed in 2016. 2 collection times to coincide with daylight savings time March 15-Mar 25 and a fall event from November 7 to November 18. We purchased zip lock polyethlene bags and distributed to every home in peel Residents were instructed to place their full battery bags on top of their organics carts during their Recycling Weeks All batteries were brought to the Fewster Community Recycling Centre for Processing MWA Spring Workshop May 2016

2 collection systems 1 used a box truck 1 used collection vehicles Box truck direct to Fewster CRC Collection vehicles went to MRF Box truck collected pails of batteries from the collection vehicles and brought them directly to Fewster One contractor the collection vehicles dropped off at the MRF. One contractor used pails to collect One used our old green bins to collect Material that went to the MRF was brought to the Fewster CRC by Regional staff for processing MWA Spring Workshop May 2016

Processing Did not debag the batteries Removed noticeable contamination Designed a sorting table Rented a electric pump cart that would raise the skids to the table height so batteries could be easily dumped onto the table Staff removed very noticeable contamination only and moved batteries into drums on skids MWA Spring Workshop May 2016
