Performance management is more than corrective action and annual reviews Understand that reinforcing positive performance and growth is valuable See the value of quality connections

2 Say: In our last half hour together we’re going to experience and share a few components of UH Performs, our performance management process at UH. Before we get into details or conversation, I want to give you an opportunity to be builders and experience what UH Performs is all about. On your tables are pieces of triangle paper that you will use. <Handout> instructions for paper origami sailboats. Half of the room should get the Growth mindset and half should get Fixed mindset. Instruct learners to fully read the instructions and keep the three key points in mind as they make their sailboats. Allow about 3-5 minutes to complete sailboats. Most learners will finish the sailboat. Debrief questions: How was that experience for you? This experience was very different across the room. You built the same thing but and had the same steps to complete so what could make it so different?

This task will serve to measure your basic underlying origami capabilities The higher your capabilities, the higher your performance should be Everyone has basic underlying skills and this activity is giving you an opportunity to display those skills This is a learning experience – you are not expected to be an origami expert Feel free to make mistakes and start over – no one is judging you Skills are developed through practice and this activity is giving you an opportunity to develop origami skills Will someone with the letter F at the bottom of their instructions, please read their instructions to the rest of us. Will someone with the letter G at the bottom of their instructions, please read their instructions to the rest of us. So what is different about the way I gave each set of instructions? This is at a very high level, what UH Performs is all about – it is about giving our staff, co-workers, team members the ability to learn, practice, and develop skills. It is not about competition or showing off. Its not about being better than the person sitting next to you, it is about being better than you were yesterday. This is what we want to instill in our employees and this is what we want you to instill in your teams, colleagues, and yourself. I used something called Growth Mindset to frame the instructions. What is Growth Mindset? <discuss and define the fixed mindset as well> Half of you were given growth mindset instructions and half of you were given fixed mindset instructions.

Part 3: Annual Performance Summary is used to indicate that we are on target with fulfilling our responsibilities and meeting performance expectations. The only required document to be submitted to HR One page, electronic for ALL employees via intranet using network sign-on; pre-populated Confirm effectively contributing & meeting job expectations, DOES NOT replace position-specific competency assessments needed for accreditation purposes, but will enable those assessments to now be electronically attached so they live in one centralized place Electronic workflow (leader to ee and back to leader) with notifications Form is electronically submitted to the personnel file, thus creating a much more efficient submittal process; always available to view Part 2: Quality Connections enable growth in all directions, make a difference in people’s lives and performance, and create a more connected UH.
