Mission: To improve the health of racial and ethnic minority populations through the development of health policies and programs that will eliminate health disparities The Office of Minority Health works to improve the health of racial and ethnic minority populations through the development of health policies and programs that will eliminate health disparities. As you may know, there is a significant body of research that documents the persistent and widespread disparities experienced by many communities in our nation. Minority cultural groups suffer disproportionately at every stage of a disaster. This adversely affects the health and well-being of individuals and families across the nation. The Office of Minority Health is dedicated to eliminating these health disparities through a variety of policies, programs, data, research, and partnerships. One strategy that we consider critical in the effort to eliminate health disparities is the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate services, or CLAS. For this reason, we developed the National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health and Health Care.

8 Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS)
Services that are respectful of and responsive to individual cultural health beliefs and practices, preferred languages, health literacy levels, and communication needs. CLAS should be employed by all members of an organization (regardless of size) at every point of contact.
