1 Paiute By Kiara

2 HOMELAND Northern Paiute lived in parts in present-day Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and California. The plants were spruce, juniper and pinon trees.

3 SOCIETY The Paiute lived in settlements with extended families.
The headman was chosen because he was respected in the community.

4 FOOD Men hunted antelope and mountain sheep.
Men hunted squirrels, rabbits and gophers.

5 HOMES During warmer months they lived in temporary shelters called lean-to. Stronger homes were called wickups.

6 CLOTHING Paiute wore clothing made from plants and animals.
Moccasins were made from tule or animal hides.

7 CRAFTS Paiute used duck decoys to attract birds.
The decoys were fake birds that looked real floating in water.

8 FAMILY Every family member helped with daily tasks.
Men fished while women dug roots.

9 CHILDREN Children learned by watching and assisting adults.
Boys and girls helped with daily tasks.

10 WAR Paiute were peaceful people.
Paiute spent most time hunting and gathering food.

11 CONTACT WITH EUROPEANS
1776- groups of Spanish explorers ventured into Utah. Encountered several Paiute women gathering seeds.

12 THE PAIUTE TODAY 1926- survey showed that most Native Americans were living in poverty. 1934- The US Congress Indian Act.
