Style: short dresses, bobbed hair cuts, lots of make up, smoker and drinker Reason: Expression new-found freedom, but why? ___________________________________________________ Fact: Small number of women were flappers in the 1920s.

A. Rural-Urban Split Farmers became increasingly poor whereas factory workers were doing well As a result, farmers move to the city Increasing number of students in urban schools need an education to compete for jobs Jobs opened for African-Americans, received lower wages than whites Faced anger/hatred from white factory workers

10 B. Immigration US looked to Mexico and Canada due to immigration quotas on Europe and Asia. Mexicans moved to LA for jobs and developed barrios- Spanish-speaking neighborhoods C. Growth of Suburbs Transportation systems used electric trolleys 1920s: buses replaced trolleys Cars became more affordable

On May 20, 1927 he flew the Spirit of St. Louis on a transatlantic flight from New York to Paris in 33.5 hours American Hero! Received a Congressional Medal of Honor B. Amelia Earhart 1928: first woman to fly across Atlantic as a passenger 1932: first woman to fly across Atlantic Ocean solo 1937: disappeared when trying to fly around the world

Gertude Ederle Olympic gold and bronze medal swimmer A product of modern times 1st woman to swim the English channel (35 miles) and beat men’s time by 2 hours! An increasing number of Americans participated in sports because of the increasing modes of transportation and leisure time.

15 Magazine Editorial Imagine you are writing an editorial/opinion piece to a magazine company (GQ, Marie Claire, etc.) On the magazine template, discuss what you have noticed about society in the 20s and how it compares/contrasts to society of today. State which time period you would rather live in and explain why. You have 20 minutes to complete this task independently.
