3 During its life 1 million copies of VisiCalc were sold.
It was first installed on Apple computers in It could handle 63 columns and 254 rows of data. The first spreadsheet for personal computers was called VisiCalc – and looked like this.

4 Today Microsoft Excel is installed on over 750 million personal computers.
It can handle 16,384 columns and 1,048,576 rows of data. That means you could record the names’ of all the people in the world on one spreadsheet.

Spreadsheets are designed to work with numbers. They are very good at complex maths. . and easy maths! In its simplest form you can think of a spreadsheet as a sheet of paper ruled into columns and rows 1 2 3 4 We could add letters to identify the columns and numbers in the rows, so that we can easily refer to the different blocks or ‘cells’ 5 15 If we make an electronic version of this we have created a spreadsheet
